Synthetic dreads, braids and fantasy hair pieces can stay looking great for much longer when they are handled gently and stored properly. Whether you wear clip-in dreads, a RavenDreadz claw clip or dread bobbles, the basics are the same: wash only when needed, avoid rough handling, let everything dry fully and keep heat to a minimum.
This guide covers everyday care for removable synthetic hair pieces as well as general care tips for synthetic dreads.
How often should you wash synthetic dreads?
Synthetic dreads and removable hair pieces do not need washing as often as natural hair. For clip-ins, claw clips and bobbles, wash them only when they genuinely need it rather than after every wear.
If you wear installed synthetic dreads, focus on keeping your scalp and natural roots clean while avoiding unnecessary scrubbing of the synthetic lengths.
How to wash synthetic dreads and hair extensions
Use cool to lukewarm water and a small amount of mild shampoo. Gently work the water through the synthetic hair without rubbing, twisting or scrubbing it aggressively.
- Do not wring or twist wet synthetic hair.
- Avoid heavy conditioner and oily styling products, which can leave residue on synthetic fibres.
- If your piece contains decorative charms, metal details or delicate attachments, contact us before soaking it if you are unsure.
How to dry synthetic hair extensions
After washing, gently press out excess water with a towel and leave the piece somewhere well ventilated to air dry completely.
Do not put synthetic hair away while it is still damp. Storing damp pieces can encourage odours and can affect the shape and finish of the hair.
How to detangle synthetic hair
The dreadlocked sections should not be brushed. If your RavenDreadz piece includes loose synthetic waves or straight hair, start by gently separating tangles with your fingers.
If needed, use a wide-tooth comb on the loose hair only. Start at the ends and work upwards in small sections, supporting the hair close to the attachment point so you are not pulling against the clip, bobble or braid.
Can you use heat on synthetic dreads?
Avoid unnecessary heat. Synthetic fibres can react very differently to human hair, and high temperatures can permanently change their texture or shape.
Do not use straighteners, curling irons or other heated styling tools unless the individual product specifically states that the fibre is heat-safe.
Sleeping, showering and swimming
For removable RavenDreadz claw clips, clip-ins and bobbles, we recommend taking them out before sleeping. This helps reduce tangling, pulling and unnecessary wear on the fastening.
Remove detachable pieces before showering or swimming wherever possible. Chlorine, salt water and repeated soaking can shorten the life of synthetic hair and decorative components. If a piece does get wet, allow it to dry completely before storing it.
How to store clip-ins, claw clips and dread bobbles
Good storage makes a big difference, especially with longer fantasy hair pieces.
- Make sure the piece is completely dry before putting it away.
- Gently separate loose synthetic hair before storage.
- Lay long pieces flat or hang them loosely rather than folding them tightly.
- Avoid crushing claw clips, braids and decorative sections.
- Keep synthetic hair away from direct heat and prolonged strong sunlight.
What if my synthetic hair becomes tangled?
Start at the ends and gently separate small sections with your fingers. Work gradually upwards towards the attachment point rather than pulling through a knot from the top.
For loose synthetic hair, a wide-tooth comb can be used carefully if required. Never tug hard against the base of a clip or bobble.
How long do synthetic hair pieces last?
There is no single fixed lifespan. It depends on how often the piece is worn, how it is stored and how gently it is handled.
Because RavenDreadz pieces are removable rather than permanent extensions, careful storage between wears can help keep them looking their best for longer.
